Page Setup-How to set your printer to reformat your margins to maximum efficiency..

When printing these images, remember that their approximate size is 1 sheet of paper. We have sized them so that they are as big as possible and still be able to print on the majority of household printers.

Red Circle: Header
The text in this text-box may look like random garbage. What this does is when you print our a page (in your browser), at the top of every page it will have the title of the page (Window Painting) and usually the page number (Page 1 of 3). On my computer it defaulted to " &w&bPage &p of &P ". I erased all of the text in here, because I don't want it to print this text. This also saves a little space, and so printing many pages won't take as much space. Yellow Circle: FooterThis page tells you how to setup your Internet Explorer so that you can print our pictures directly. Without this setup, your printer may not print the full picture. These instructions should work for most computers. If you have any trouble, don't hesitate to e-mail us.

These instructions were made with Internet Explorer 5.5. If you use a different version, or a different Browser (Netscape, AOL, Opera, etc) then you might have to change them. They should be similar though. First of all, you should be in your browser viewing our site (which, unless you printed or e-mailed this page, you are here now). Now, click the File Menu. This probably will be near the top-left of your screen. That should open a menu with many items in it. Click on Page Setup. This should open a window similar to that seen below (your view may be different, but it should include all of the important items).

Now, what we need to do is verify that the settings are set-up correctly. Below is a picture in which we circled all of the important items. We will step through each one, letting you know what it does, and what setting we recommend. Note that if you change your margins below what is acceptable to your printer, Windows will probably pop up a box saying it has reset them. This is good, because Windows will set whichever were too small to an acceptable value. This is how I figure out what is acceptable to my printer. Also, if you do decide to remove your header and/or footer (which I did), you should make a note of the exact text in the boxes, so you can undo the change if you ever want to. The text in this text-box might also look like random garbage. What this does is when you print our a page (in your browser), at the bottom of every page it will have the URL (http://www.windowpainting.org/...) and usually the date will appear on the bottom right. On my computer it defaulted to " &u&b&d ". Remember, these were from an IE browser version 5.5, and so your computer may not have them. I erased all of the text in here, because I don't want it to print this text. This also saves a little space, and so printing many pages won't take as much space.

Green Circle: Orientation This is an option button with two options, Portrait and Landscape. Portrait is how your printer usually prints ( 8.5 inches wide, and 11 inches tall ). When you change this to Landscape, your printer prints everything sideways and so when it comes out of the printer, you turn the page on it' side. You then have a page printed where it is wider than it is tall ( 11 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall ). This should be on Portrait for most pictures, unless they are wider than they are tall.

Blue Circle: Horizontal Margins In here you specify the horizontal margins. Most printers have a minimum of between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch. I would recommend setting both of these to 0.5".

Fusha Circle: Top Margin This is how much space your printer will skip at the top of a page. Most printers can print anywhere from 1/10 inch to 1/2 inch from the top. I would recommend setting this to either 0.5". or 0.25".. I would set it to the smaller setting if you have a header or footer, to save space.

Aqua Circle: Bottom Margin This is how close to the bottom of the page the printer will try to print to. Most printers have a range of 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. My printer can print .652" from the bottom, which is what I have mine set to. I would recommend setting yours to the minimum allowed by your printer. 0.5".

White Rectangle: OK Button After you have made any changes you want, click the OK button to confirm them. If you entered any invalid values, Windows will pop up a message box saying so, and reset the bad values to valid ones. This is good. This is how you find out what margins your printer requires. If you have trouble printing pictures from our site, try to reduce your margins or remove the header/footer. We have set up our pictures so they should print fine as long as you have no more than 1 inch or horizontal margins (left and right added together) and no more than 1 1/4 inch in vertical margins. If you have a header or footer set up, then they take up even more space, and so pictures may not print correctly.
